Social Security System (SSS)

SSS Unemployment Benefit

SSS Unemployment Benefit is a cash benefit for covered employees (including kasambahay) and OFWs who are involuntarily separated and meet contribution rules—typically at least 36 monthly contributions with 12 in the 18 months before separation, no settled unemployment benefit in the last three years, age at separation not over 60 (with published exceptions such as mineworkers and jockeys), and filing within one year of separation. File the claim online in My.SSS first, then apply for the DOLE Certification of Involuntary Separation (POLO/POEA for OFWs) within 30 calendar days of filing; SSS states the claim is automatically cancelled if that certification step is missed. Separation for just causes under the Labor Code that SSS lists as disqualifying does not qualify.

Cash unemployment benefit for involuntarily separated employees, kasambahay, and OFWs who meet SSS contribution, age, and DOLE certification rules—filed online through My.SSS.

What You’ll Need

Use this as a preparation checklist. Items marked “If it applies” are situational.

  • Involuntary separation for a covered reason

    Official source

SSS lists covered involuntary-separation grounds and separately lists just-cause separations that do not qualify. Read both lists on the official page.

  • 36 monthly contributions, including 12 in the prior 18 months

    Official source

At least thirty-six monthly contributions, twelve of which should be in the eighteen-month period immediately preceding the month of involuntary separation.

  • Age at separation not over 60 (with published exceptions)

    Official source

SSS states age at the time of involuntary separation must not be over 60 years, with published lower caps for certain occupations (for example mineworkers and jockeys). Confirm the live bullets on the Unemployment Benefit page.

  • No settled unemployment benefit in the last three years

    Official source

SSS allows unemployment benefit only once every three years counted from the date of involuntary separation.

  • My.SSS account and enrolled disbursement account

    Official source

File online in My.SSS and enroll a disbursement account through DAEM when required for payment.

  • DOLE Certification of Involuntary Separation (POLO/POEA for OFWs)

    Official source

After you file in My.SSS, apply for this certification within 30 calendar days. SSS states the claim is automatically cancelled if the certification is not obtained in time.

How To Do It

  1. 1

Confirm involuntary-separation ground, age, and contribution count

    Official source

Do not file if separation falls under a published disqualifying just cause, or if you are over the published age limit for your occupation.

  2. 2

Update My.SSS and enroll disbursement (DAEM) if needed

    Official source

Have identity and bank/e-wallet details ready before filing.

  3. 3

File the unemployment claim in My.SSS within one year of separation

    Official source

SSS states claims must be filed online through My.SSS within one year from the date of involuntary separation.

  4. 4

Within 30 calendar days, apply for DOLE (or POLO/POEA) certification

    Official source

Apply for the Certification of Involuntary Separation after filing. Missing this deadline cancels the claim automatically per SSS.

  5. 5

Track evaluation and payment in My.SSS

    Official source

Respond to any SSS follow-up requests promptly.

Fees

Getting an SS Number is separate from paying contributions. Confirm contribution amounts on official SSS channels.

Important Notes

  • 30-day certification deadline is critical

    Official source

Filing in My.SSS alone is not enough. SSS requires the DOLE (POLO/POEA for OFWs) Certification of Involuntary Separation within 30 calendar days after filing, or the claim is automatically cancelled.

  • Just-cause separation does not qualify

    Official source

SSS publishes Labor Code just-cause grounds that disqualify unemployment benefit even when separation is labeled involuntary by the employee. Confirm against the official page.

  • Not employment-law advice

    Official source

Whether your separation is involuntary for SSS purposes is determined by SSS rules and documents—not by this guide.
